Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Treatment at Movex Clinics: Discover the Second Episode of Our Collaborative Podcast

On May 31st, we released the second episode of our collaborative podcast with Movex Clinics on Onda Vasca. This time, we had the special participation of Maite Molinuevo, coordinator of Movex Living Lab and head of Neurology-specialized Physiotherapy. Maite discussed the innovative treatments using Gogoa’s exoskeleton for neurological conditions such as stroke, cerebral palsy, and spinal cord injuries.

We also heard the inspiring story of Melani, who suffered a cervical spinal cord crush due to a fall. Melani detailed her treatment journey with Gogoa’s exoskeleton, a process that has enabled her to walk again and regain her quality of life.

The Exoskeletons That Improve Quality of Life

Gogoa Mobility Robots, through its own robotic neurorehabilitation clinics, Movex Clinics, leads a true revolution in the fields of rehabilitation and ergonomics. With centers located in Urretxu and Bilbao, we specialize in robotic neurorehabilitation for various neurological and degenerative conditions, including stroke, spinal cord injuries, brain and spinal tumors, cerebral palsy, ataxias, as well as degenerative diseases like Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis (MS), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Cutting-Edge Technology in Rehabilitation

At Gogoa, we utilize a variety of advanced technologies for rehabilitation, including gait and hand exoskeletons, as well as virtual reality systems. But what exactly is an exoskeleton? It is a robotic framework that attaches to the patient’s body to help people with motor disabilities regain or improve their mobility. Designed for use in clinical settings under the supervision of healthcare professionals, these exoskeletons are aimed at the rehabilitation of patients with neurological injuries, degenerative diseases, or musculoskeletal issues.

The rehabilitative use of the exoskeleton is based on the principle of neural plasticity, leveraging the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new connections. This is achieved through the intensive repetition of movements, helping healthy brain areas to take over the functions of the damaged ones and reprogramming motor neurons to respond to weaker or distorted signals.

Innovation and Personalization in Treatment

At Gogoa, we develop our own technology, which we then apply in our clinics to offer personalized treatments. Depending on each patient’s functional state and goals, we use different technologies with the appropriate intensity to maximize the benefits of rehabilitation.

Success Story: Melani

Tratamiento Rehabilitación Lesión Medular

Melani, a 53-year-old woman, suffered an incomplete cervical 5 spinal cord injury in January 2017 after falling from a ladder in her bar. This injury affected both her upper and lower limbs.

Melani began her rehabilitation with us in May 2023, attending for three months. Her initial functional state included weakness in her arms and legs, requiring two crutches to walk and a wheelchair for long distances. She also had balance and stability issues, and her left hand lacked strength and coordination.

The treatment included the use of the Hand of Hope hand exoskeleton and the Arm Tutor device, the HANK gait exoskeleton, and manual neurorehabilitation with exercises focusing on strength, coordination, stability, and balance, as well as functional activities like stair climbing.

Treatment Results

After three months of treatment, Melani showed significant improvement: increased strength in her lower limbs, improved stability and balance, thereby reducing the risk of falls. Her posture in standing and during walking also improved. For long distances, she still uses two crutches, but in safe and controlled environments, such as her home and the clinic, she can walk without them. Additionally, she has improved in transfers and can now climb and descend steps more easily.

Patient's Opinion and Vision

Melani expressed her gratitude and optimism about her recovery. Her experience highlights the positive impact that Gogoa’s technology can have on people’s lives, enabling them to regain their mobility and independence.

At Gogoa Mobility Robots, we remain committed to developing innovative solutions to improve our patients' quality of life. Stay tuned for our upcoming episodes to learn more about our advancements and success stories!
